New Westminster is noteworthy as being the first capital of B.C., back in the mid-19th century when the Province was the Colony of British Columbia. The City of New Westminster is located on the north bank of the Fraser River, bordered by Burnaby to the north and west, and Coquitlam to the northeast. On the other side of the river, Surrey is southwest of New Westminster, with Vancouver about 20 kilometres or a half-hour drive to the west.
New Westminster is predominantly a residential area, and the city grid has not changed much since the streets and roadways of it were designed to accommodate horse-drawn carts and buggies. The city is also home to many heritage homes, built well over 100 years ago.
New Westminster is fairly well-served by public transportation, with both the New Westminster and Columbia Street SkyTrain Stations very close to the waterfront. In the summer, the Ferry runs between the Queensborough and Quayside neighbourhoods. New Westminster’s Uptown district is the city’s main “downtown” area. Columbia Street is also a popular commercial area with stores and older heritage buildings.
