Coquitlam was incorporated as a city in 1992, and currently has a population of 148,625, making it the sixth largest municipality in Metro Vancouver. It’s one of the “Tri-Cities,” along with the neighbouring suburbs of Port Coquitlam and Port Moody. The city is located on the north bank of the Fraser River between Burnaby and New Westminster to the west and Port Coquitlam and Pitt Meadows to the east. Northwest and northeast Coquitlam include the lower slopes of the Eagle and Burke Mountains, with peaks up to 1,600 m high.
A key landmark in Coquitlam is the Maillardville region, named for Father Maillard, a young Oblate from France. It was a vibrant community, the largest Francophone centre west of Manitoba, and the seed for the future growth of Coquitlam. Maillardville’s past is recognized in street names that honour early pioneers and in local redevelopments which reflect its French-Canadian heritage. Coquitlam Town Centre is the focal point for civic, cultural and educational services. There are numerous parks including Mundy, Minnekhada, Colony Farm, and Widgeon Marsh.
